saussure

2 levels of meaning to an object within a media text

- signifier

 - what we see

- the form the sign takes

signified

up to the audience to make up their mind until they find out (bank and bank)

Barthes

- states that this meaning is influenced by society and the audiences experiences

Denotation (what we see)

Connotation (what it means)

example..... (poppi)

(rememberence day)

(war)

(respect)

(editing in our coursework ....when she runs away)
matches the lyrics

Stuart Hall

looks at meanings within a text

Encoding... any meaning in the text has been encoded my the producer.

Decoding

the audience will then decode this message and make their own interpretation.

Hall belives that producers encode these ideas with the intention that the audience will prefer the intended meaning

preffered , oppositional and negotiated

- preffered - totally agree

- oppositional - kinda agree

- negotiated - disagree
